SILVER SERIES OF MODERN INDIAN ART

Silver Series of Modern Indian Art

July 14, 2020

“The problematic relationship between global modernity and national identity was a dominant theme of Indian art through the twentieth century as indeed of arts of the third world in general.” – Partha Mitter

The story of Indian Modern art stands distant from that of the rest of the world. English colonialism had created a crisis of identity in the Indian conscience. Artists, thinkers, poets and authors felt it imperative to move away from western naturalism in order to find an Indian identity. While global modernity was forced by industrialisation where modern art represented the theme of alienation of self, Indian artists sought to unite their endeavors with the traditional society. Artists went back to the classical and tribal Indian aesthetics to fill the void of lost confidence.

DAG, a pioneer modern art gallery in Delhi, New York and Mumbai, time and again have brought to fore many modern artists of India. They have constantly supported new research related to Modern Indian art history.

With their third edition of the online sale called ‘Silver Series’, they have curated works of diverse artists. The show included works by Bikash Bhattacharjee, Ramkinker Baij, Nandlal Bose, BN Arya, Rameshwar Broota, MV Dhurandhar, etc. Through this show they have also showcased works of artists who were not recognised during their lifetime.

10% of the online proceeds will go to Apne Aap Women Worldwide, a charity founded by Emmy-winning journalist Ruchira Gupta. The charity works with the mission to end sex trafficking by dismantling the prostitution networks. It provides policy work for education, health care, legal protection, and livelihood skills to marginalised women.
