Among India’s top couturiers, Gaurav Gupta’s name is taken with a lot of fanfare and reverence. He has been dressing not only the Indian but also the global A-listers for their red-carpet appearances. A regular invitee to the prestigious Paris Couture Week, Gaurav had to skip the just concluded Paris Couture Week, fall/winter 2024 due to an unfortunate fire accident at his atelier where Gaurav Gupta and his muse got injured. However, not to disappoint his global buyers and the fashionistas, Gaurav showcased his autumn/winter couture collection, titled ‘Jyotirgamaya’ digitally. Gaurav will be showcasing his couture collection at the forthcoming India Couture Week, 2024.
We at MASH had the privilege to preview Gaurav Gupta’s new couture collection that represents the couturiers spiritual journey from darkness to light. The collection also embodies Egyptian mysticism. We find reptilian detailing and textures on the ensembles and plentiful iridescent effect created with glass beads and crystals. Signature Gaurav Gupta draping and sculpting techniques were omnipresent.

The colour story also moved from darkness to light. There were hues moving from black to blue to shades of Bordeaux, champagne, sand and ivory. Aari embroidery and Zari Zardozi work were intricately used to embellish the ensembles with metallic threads to add sheen.

The beautifully draped saree gowns, the well crafted columnar gowns, metallic peplum dresses with swirling reptilian hood, sculpted winged gowns and beautiful corsetry work with whale-bone detailing were exquisite. We particularly loved the innovative Sharara trousers (extreme flared pants),cropped jacket with moulded breast plates, paired with dhoti trousers, asymmetric gown with meteoric embroidery with a draped bolero, peplum jacket with architecturally sculpted shoulders paired with sharara trousers and Bordeaux corseted sculpted gown with sculpted details on the waist.

With the ‘Jyotirgamaya’ collection, Gaurav Gupta introduced artisanal jewellery. Crafted in antique gold and silver, the different styles of ear-cuffs and chokers enhanced the beauty of the ensembles. The collection did impress us with seamlessly marrying tradition with innovation and showcasing exemplary craftsmanship in corsetry, draping and sculpting techniques.
