FDCI X LAKME FASHION WEEK WINTER/FESTIVE 2021 PART II : TRAVERSING FROM LOCAL TO GLOBAL

At the second edition of FDCI x Lakme Fashion Week, Winter/ Festive 2021 there’s an overload of trends and new fashion to see. There are designers celebrating the rich textile heritage of India, there are designers going ‘Carbon-Neutral’ and then there are designers showcasing the latest trends in the globe.

Gaurang showcased a collection of jamdani sarees from all over India. He did a physical runway show and mesmerised all with absolutely beautiful jamdani. The jamdani weave is considered the most complex technique in the country and the line displayed the creations from Dhaka, Benares, Kota, Srikakulam, Uppada, Venkatagiri, Kashmir and Paithan. Gaurang ensured that the gorgeous beauty of the saris was further enhanced with the selection of myriad colours, weaves and embroidery.

Abhishek Gupta’s dazzling “Benares” collection was a fashionable homage, as well as a homecoming of sorts at the FDCI x Lakmé Fashion Week. Showcased through a short film in Benaras, Abhishek Gupta was at home with his exuberant collection. Abhishek is known for his focus on the construction of a garment. The ensembles were almost moulded on the bodies of the models. His collection for men and women had jewel tones of Prussian blue, teal green, burgundy and black that were embellished with gold. Brocades, silks and tulles of Benaras were textured with fine appliqué, quilting and intricate pleating. Abhishek continued with his signature craft of motifs seamlessly embroidered over seams.

Troy Costa showcased his cruise collection at the physical runway, where the models seemed to jaywalk happily in a holiday mood. He showcased a men’s collection of slim fit pants with fitted jackets, bermudas paired with printed jackets, lots of bombers and he is one of those rare designers who flashed his label’s insignia across the jackets, tees and sneakers. In the designer’s own words, “When it is razzle-dazzle, slickly, designed casual but great travel wear, which the millennial man wants, then he has to head towards the “Avido Tourista” collection by Troy Costa.

Monisha Jaising and Shweta Bachchan Nanda made their joint label – MXS debut with a grand runway show. It was all about the 80s Disco era and street fashion. Functional fashion with bling and colour was MXS’ forte. We saw some ’Superwoman’ cape dresses, minis, sheaths, sack dresses, pencil skirts and cropped jackets. It was a blend of athleisure and cocktail dressing made out of silk, lycra, ribbed knits with metallic texturing and loads of bling.
