TOP 5 EXHIBITS IN BERLIN BY SHALINI PASSI – JANUARY

TOP 5 EXHIBITS IN BERLIN BY SHALINI PASSI – JANUARY

Berlin is the focal point of European Contemporary Art. The artists, galleries and various multimedia practices emerging out of Berlin are experimental, insightful and inventive. While immersive exhibits form the core of upcoming shows, following are key highlights from the January 2022 edit of art shows around the city.

ALICJA KWADE: IN ABWESENHEIT (IN ABSENCE

Alicja Kwade’s works are philosophically, socially and scientifically charged. Based in Berlin, the artist used mundane materials as a metaphor to raise questions on the notions of energy and time. The show is on until April 4, 2022 at Berlinische Galerie, Museum of Modern Art. “In Abwesenheit” (In Absence) is a series of exploratory self portraits by the artist. One of the works titled “Self Portrait” from the show is made of 24 natural elements comprising the human body.

ALEXANDER CALDER. MINIMAL / MAXIMAL

The Neue Nationalgalerie – experimentally designed, often mobile works, range from miniature objects to monumental sculptures and mobiles. The exhibition ALEXANDER CALDER. MINIMAL / MAXIMAL traces this special relationship between size, scale and spatiality and will have a particularly magical effect in Mies van der Rohe’s newly restored architecture. The show is exhibited at The Neue Nationalgalerie until February 13.

ROBERT IRWIN : LIGHT AND SPACE

The exhibition by American artist Robert Irwin continues his series of works Light and Space from 2007 and also represents Irwin’s largest artwork in Europe.

The artist uses fluorescent tubes that interact with abstract patterns on white walls. In the exhibition, Irwin addresses the relationship between artwork and time, as well as the perception of the viewer and the relationship that emerges. The site-specific exhibit is at Kraftwerk Berlin until January 30, 2022.

GIUDO CASARETTO : ‘OF GOATS, SCAPES AND APPROPRIATION’

In this solo exhibition by artist Guido Casaretto at Zilberman Gallery, Berlin, the artist examines the material making process and imitates them. Casaretto works across various mediums, creating a reality that conceals the original. With his Turkish heritage, the artist believes in multi-sensory engagement through his works.

FRANKA HÖRNSCHEMEYER : NOISE SPHERE

“Information and structure are mutually dependent. I think that information is much more decisive for the outlook of the world than matter. Information is the in-between, the relative space between matter. A complex structure builds up from that arrangement, and that is the information that is within the system.”

— Franka Hörnschemeyer

Franka Hörnschemeyer explores space as a subject within her work through architectural forms. In her solo show with Galerie Thomas Schulte, one of the works, Rho is a large-scale sculpture made of nine cuboid forms, all made from recycled formwork panels.
